Spain Invests €808M in Quantum to Strengthen Technology and Infrastructure — What This Means for Qilimanjaro

On April 24th, the Spanish government announced a major plan: it will invest €808 million to support quantum technologies over the next few years.

This comes at a time when the importance of strong, reliable technology infrastructure has never been clearer, after recent outages across Spain and Portugal disrupted airports, transport, and services. The investment is part of Spain’s National Quantum Technologies Strategy 2025–2030, which also hopes to bring in another €700 million from private companies and the European Union.

This strategy was presented at the (OECD) Global Technology Forum in Madrid and is supported by EU funding mechanisms such as the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

This is a big step, not just for Spain, but for all of us working in quantum. And for Qilimanjaro, it’s a sign that our hard work is being recognized and supported.

A Big Moment for Quantum in Spain

The new strategy focuses on four main goals:

  • Building stronger quantum a strong quantum ecosystem and infrastructure,
  • Helping research turn into real technology,
  • Training more people to work in quantum,
  • And encouraging collaboration between companies, universities, and government.

More specifically, the strategy highlights key priorities such as strengthening cybersecurity through post-quantum cryptography, creating national capabilities in quantum sensing, and developing the convergence between quantum and artificial intelligence. It also aims to promote awareness of quantum’s societal impact and to consolidate a coordinated national governance model.

This approach matches what we’ve been doing at Qilimanjaro since day one: developing real quantum computers, working closely with scientists, and staying focused on solutions that make sense.

Why This Matters for Qilimanjaro

For Qilimanjaro, this investment means more than just money,  it means trust.

We’re already involved in key national projects like Quantum Spain, the CUCO project, and the recently announced EuroQCS-Spain quantum system. This plan gives us the support to keep growing: hiring new talent, improving our technology, and expanding our reach across Europe and beyond.

It also complements existing initiatives like the €10 million Quantum Communications Hub, which will support secure communications and photonics research across institutions such as ICFO, UPM, and the Donostia International Physics Center.

It also opens new opportunities to collaborate more closely with universities, labs, industries, and to help Barcelona become a major center for quantum technology.

We Build with Integrity, Not Hype

Quantum computing is full of big promises, but at Qilimanjaro, we believe in results.
We build real systems based on strong science, and we don’t rely on hype.

Spain’s new strategy highlights this same commitment to real, measurable progress, placing emphasis on industrial capability, talent development, and research infrastructure.

It’s a chance to keep doing what we do best: advancing quantum in a smart, honest, and impactful way.

We’re proud to be part of Spain’s quantum future , and this is just the beginning.
